Living in a material world

I wrote this piece after I noticed how much I was scrolling through social media, wanting to buy items my favorite influencers were wearing. Plenty of teenagers are swept up in social media viewing videos marketing a product. Often these products are overpriced and not worth the splurge. I asked students if they thought social media played a role in how their peers shop and how, I also asked about factors that go into purchases. I learned students emphasize the name of the brand more than the quality of the item.

Band together

This story was one for the Eagle's Eye website and also our school's yearbook. Each year Eisenhower's band wins high accolades for their performances and the music they make. In the interviews, I learned about how they come together as not only a team but as friends to create the type of environment for good music. Not only do they spend time inside of school together practicing and bonding, but they also take their bonds outside of school as well and stay in tune with each other.

Rolling with the big leagues

My classmate Dylan Harnden shared that he had the opportunity to train with Team USA Bowling over the summer. I wrote this story about his time at the training camp and future aspirations. It's not often a student in your own community is able to train at a national level. I talked to Dylan Harnden about his trials and errors, main take aways, and where he wanted to end up in his bowling career. I also interviewed his dad, Mark Harnden who inspired Dylan's interest where he shared his feelings about his son's accomplishments.

Dismantling school violence

Violence in schools is prominent in America. Jordan Serafimovski, a senior enrolled in the school's film class, shot a short film about school shootings and entered it in the “Knock Violence Out of My School” video competition. While not exactly an act of violence, our school has had instances where weapons were threatened, or a weapon was brought on the primises. I asked him about what the video meant to him personally as a student in America and what he wanted to get across. He ended up winning first place in the competition.
